Breakfast Television

The Breakfast Television segment on Monday morning was shot on location, at Rogers Arena. Greg was interviewed by BT’s Live Eye host Greg Harper, where they talked about Greg’s debut this week on the popular show Poker After Dark. Greg also had the chance to rub elbows with Canucks alumni Cliff Ronning, colour commentator John Garrett, and Jack McIlhargey.
ROCK 101

The next stop was Rock 101 to chat with the guys from The Bro Jake Show. Once again, Greg talked about poker, his upcoming stint on Poker After Dark (Mon-Sat at 2am on NBC), as well as a little bit about his hometown Vancouver Canucks’ season thus far, and the results of the SuperBowl the previous weekend. It was a truly great interview. Greg always seems to have a good time when he visits the Bro Jake Show.

Well, the 2010 BC Poker Championships are all wrapped up. The Main Event was taken down on November 28th by Eric Place of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Here is part of the wrap-up report from CanadaPoker.com (posted Tuesday, November 30th, 2010 at 9:52 am):

It’s been an exciting week here in Richmond, British Columbia where the beautiful River Rock Casino have been host to one of Canada’s most prestigious tournaments, the BC Poker Championships. The BCPC comprised of three great tournaments, the $550 No Limit Hold’em, $1,100 No Limit Hold’em and $2,700 No Limit Hold’em events.

…

The $2,700 Main Event started underneath the world’s largest disco ball as recorded by Guinness world records. There were 548 players making up the astonishing $1,345,000 prize pool, one of the largest for a Canadian poker tournament. The top 55 players received a cash prize but the big winner of the event was Eric Place of Halifax, Nova Scotia who grabbed the $300,000 Grand Prize. He played heads up against Connor Allisen of White Rock, BC. Allisen took $189,978 for this 2nd place finish. A notable 3rd place finish was by former 2009 COPC Champion Benjamin Leblond from Wakefield, Quebec who took home $119,491.

The final hand of the event was won with 2 pair, eights and sevens on the board.

Many of the professional poker players such as Brad ‘Yukon’ Booth, Greg ‘FBT’ Mueller, Gavin Smith and Matt Jarvis attempted to take home the top prize.

We would like to thank the River Rock Casino Resort for organizing an unforgettable tournament.

Congratulations to all the winners!

We agree. The River Rock put on a phenomenal tournament. Unfortunately Greg didn’t make it to the top 55 to win a cash prize, but his best bud Cory “Pro Wilki” Wilkinson made it to the final table – with Greg at his side, doing the live announcing for the final tables.

It’s 7:45 a.m. and Greg Mueller is in a limo making his way to Vancouver radio station Rock 101 for an interview to help hype the B.C. Poker Championships at Richmond’s River Rock Casino Resort.

Mueller is used to early starts.

A lot of mornings on the ice as a youth while growing up in White Rock led to a nine-year professional hockey career in Germany, where boring 10-hour bus trips on game days gave him plenty of opportunity to play poker against teammates.

In poker circles, Mueller is known as FBT or Full Blown Tilt, a nickname that stuck though Mueller insists he’s never really tilted.

During his hockey days, a friend who was a poker pro advised him that teetering on tilt and losing control of his emotions wasn’t profitable.

“Just me being impatient in buffet lines and in traffic and…when I get to the game, ‘Am I next up, am I next up?’ always being antsy and stuff, he just came up with the name.”

But the ability to mask his emotions and wait patiently for the right cards came later in his career. That, combined with an ability to discern visual clues about the strength or weakness of an opponent’s hand through nervous twitches or a repeated routine, has helped him be successful and earn more than $1.7 million.

Mueller doesn’t like to play poker in his own backyard, but this week’s tourney, which starts today, is different.

Normally, Mueller travels across North America and Europe to where the big money tournaments are held, and games of that magnitude aren’t commonplace in Vancouver, where he now lives.

Plus, when he’s in town, he likes to spend time with his family.

But the B.C. Poker Championships is on his radar, and with a prize pool of more than $2 million, has the sort of action he’s looking for.

It’s a bonus that he knows many of the people from his early days as a professional poker player, and that the staff at River Rock treat him so well.

“The tournament is a pretty good tournament and definitely one that is worth coming out for and playing. A lot of people fly in for it. It’s a bigger tournament than most people give it credit for. And they put a lot of effort into it and run it really well.”

The $2,700 No-Limit Texas Hold’em tournament runs from Nov. 25 to 28. Players must be 19 and older and can register by calling 604-247-8983.

The BC Poker Championships are back and once again being hosted at the River Rock Casino in Richmond, BC. Daniel Negreanu, the 2008 BCPC Champion, will be there to compete, as well as fellow Canadian Gavin Smith, in what is one of the largest poker tournaments in Canada. In fact, many poker pros will be invading Vancouver during this tournament, so it’s a good time to head on down to the River Rock to catch some of the action.

Greg Mueller is, of course, the hometown favourite, and he will be at the River Rock pretty much all day every day during the tournament. So if you want to meet him, ask him questions, or get his autograph, NOW is the time! We hope to see all his local fans out there supporting him, to help him bring down the house.

“We are so proud of having Greg [Mueller] as our hometown favourite player in this year’s BC Poker Championships,” says Rick Duff GM of River Rock Casino Resort. “He’s a huge draw for our guests after his World Series wins. We always love having him here.”

**

For those interested, the tournament schedule is below.
